The Class 37s were introduced from 1960 and the first allocation went to Stratford. These locomotives were used on trains from Liverpool St. to Norwich, Cambridge and Clacton. These trains were also used for crew training. Stratford received more brand new 37s shortly after the initial batch and allocations were also made to March and Ipswich. Over the years the Class 37 became one of British Rails most widespread and successful types. The familiar bark of their 1750 hp English Electric engine has helped to make them a firm favourite with Enthusiasts.

This is volume one in our tribute to the Class 37s. The material was shot in 1983/84 and covers quite a widespread area. London, Humberside, East Anglia, North West including Manchester and The Scottish Highlands.

In 1983/84 the 37s were a familiar sight on passenger trains from Liverpool St. to Kings Lynn and also to Norwich via Cambridge. The DVD starts at Liverpool St. and when 37070 starts up to make a shunt we are treated to a short cab ride. We also see 37068.

Next stop is Kings Lynn where we watch as 37116 arrives from Liverpool St. runs round and departs. Classic shots of a steam heated train and coupling on the locomotive. Other members of the Class are seen moving around the yard.

The Norwich to  Liverpool St. via Cambridge service is represented by the fine sight of March stalwart 119 calling at Wymondham in the wilds of Norfolk.

At Barnetby we see 37s double heading the heavy Immingham to  Scunthorpe iron ore trains. Two pairs would be in action on any given day and on this particular day it was 37160/211 and 37153/202.  Some Immingham oil traffic is also included.

More double headers in the North West at locations including Chinley, Romiley and Strines. This time it is Peakstone hoppers and 37219/238 totally obliterate the countryside as they pass with white dust billowing from the first hopper on their train. Besides several Peakstone double headers we see mixed freight, bulk cement, freightliner and spoil. Some other locations in The North West are Attercliffe Road, Manchester Victoria and Guide Bridge.

Farther south some other locations are Chesterfield, Stainforth and Peterborough.

At Lowestoft we see 37088 depart with the penultimate hauled 07.17 Lowestoft to  Liverpool St. Then we watch the final train arrive and depart Beccles the following day with 37049 in charge. The Driver enters into the spirit of the occasion.

In 1984 several members of the Class had settled in Scotland as staple motive power in the West Highlands.

At Glasgow we take a lingering look at 37112 awaiting departure and then watch her depart for Oban before venturing into the Highlands.

We see some fireworks at Crianlarich as 37027 gets a heavy freight moving. 37264 is sporting the new livery with large logo and wrap around yellow ends. She also carries The West Highland Tours Headboard. 027 turns up again, this time hauling ETHEL 3 and an amazing mixture of coaching stock. 37188 arrives and makes a blistering departure.

With Ben Dorian as a back drop 027 turns up yet again on a mixed freight and 011 passes with a passenger train. Then we get an absolute treat as 37089 passes with a train of tanks. The shot is quite long in duration and just listen to that EE 12 CSVT using every ounce of its 1750 hp. Several other Highland locations are included including Oban and Mallaig
