The Brush Type 2; later Class 31’s were introduced from 1957. The chatter of their 1470 hp English Electric 12SVT engine became a familiar sound over most of the Rail Network.

The footage on this DVD was shot from 1983 to 1987 inclusive and is essential viewing for all Class 31 fans.

31308 and 31309 provide a splendid sight at Barnetby, each with their train of Mk.1 stock and a backdrop of semaphore signals. At Ely we see 31152 call with the Manchester Vic. – Harwich P. Q. boat train. This service provided a regular duty for the Class.

We watch some 31’s near Edale and listen to the sound of their engines reverberate around the Hope Valley. Then after calling at Skegness, Cleethorpes and Grimsby Town we settle down at Bury St. Edmunds. Here we watch action from 167, 184/218, 221, 263, 420 and skinhead 450.

An extended visit to Peterborough sees passenger, freight and engineers trains. Here the action is provided by 132, 183, 202, skinhead 215, 219, 257, 263, 309, 403, 412, 416, 420, 429 and 452.

Other locations are – Derby, Kings Lynn, Attenborough, Stainforth, Passing Peckfield Colliery, Strines, Chinley, Stowmarket, Ipswich, Melton Mowbray, Birmingham N.S., London Paddington, Norwich, Bristol T. M. and Exeter St. Davids.

The DVD ends with 31234 in charge of an amazing mixed freight at Oxford.
